RESUMEN

Madariaga virus (MADV) and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) are emerging arboviruses affecting rural and remote areas of Latin America. However, there are limited clinical and epidemiological reports available, and outbreaks are occurring at an increasing frequency. We addressed this gap by analyzing all the available clinical and epidemiological data of MADV and VEEV infections recorded since 1961 in Panama. A total of 168 of human alphavirus encephalitis cases were detected in Panama from 1961 to 2023. Here we describe the clinical signs and symptoms and epidemiological characteristics of these cases, and also explored signs and symptoms as potential predictors of encephalitic alphavirus infection when compared to those of other arbovirus infections occurring in the region. Our results highlight the challenges clinical diagnosis of alphavirus disease in endemic regions with overlapping circulation of multiple arboviruses.

Parechovirus A (PeV-A, Parechovirus, Picornaviridae) are human pathogens associated with mild to severe gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases in young children. While several studies have investigated the association of PeV-A with human disease, little is known about its epidemiology or detection in Latin America. Between the years 2014 and 2015, a total of 200 samples were collected from Panamanian pediatric patients aged < 16 years old exhibiting symptoms associated with respiratory (n = 64), gastrointestinal (n = 68), or neurological (n = 68) diseases. These samples were gathered from patients who had previously received negative diagnoses for the main respiratory viruses, rotavirus, and neurological viruses like herpes virus, enterovirus, and cytomegalovirus. The presence of PeV-A was analyzed by real time RT-PCR.Eight positive PeV-A infections (4.0%, 95% CI: 1.7 to 7.7) were detected: two in respiratory samples (3.0%, 95% CI: 0.3 to 10.8), five in gastrointestinal samples (7.3%, 95% CI: 2.4 to 16.3), and one in cerebrospinal fluid (1.5%, 95% CI: 1.4 to 7.9). The study provides evidence of PeV-A circulation in Panama and the data collectively, remarked on the importance of considering PeV-A in the Panamanian pediatric diagnostic landscape, especially when conventional testing for more common viruses yields negative results.

Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV), Madariaga virus (MADV), and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus complex (VEEV) are New World alphaviruses transmitted by mosquitoes. They cause febrile and sometimes severe neurological diseases in human and equine hosts. Detecting them during the acute phase is hindered by non-specific symptoms and limited diagnostic tools. We designed and clinically assessed real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assays (rRT-PCRs) for VEEV complex, MADV, and EEEV using whole-genome sequences. Validation involved 15 retrospective serum samples from 2015 to 2017 outbreaks, 150 mosquito pools from 2015, and 118 prospective samples from 2021 to 2022 surveillance in Panama. The rRT-PCRs detected VEEV complex RNA in 10 samples (66.7%) from outbreaks, with one having both VEEV complex and MADV RNAs. VEEV complex RNA was found in five suspected dengue cases from disease surveillance. The rRT-PCR assays identified VEEV complex RNA in three Culex (Melanoconion) vomerifer pools, leading to VEEV isolates in two. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the VEEV ID subtype in positive samples. Notably, 11.9% of dengue-like disease patients showed VEEV infections. Together, our rRT-PCR validation in human and mosquito samples suggests that this method can be incorporated into mosquito and human encephalitic alphavirus surveillance programs in endemic regions.

Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease triggered by dysbiotic biofilms, involving the host's immune response, systemic and behavioral factors, including psychosocial conditions. This systematic review aimed to investigate the possible association between periodontitis and anxiety in adults. Searches were performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Lilacs, Cochrane, and OpenGrey databases, without language restrictions, considering studies in adults (P-Participants), with (E-Exposure) and without periodontitis (C- Comparison) in an outcome of association with anxiety (O-outcome). Methodological quality assessment was carried out using the Newcastle-Ottawa protocol for case-control and cross-sectional studies, followed by an analysis of the level of evidence using the GRADE tool. Metanalysis was not performed due to several differences in methods applied by authors in primary studies. Eleven observational studies were selected according to the inclusion criteria from the total of 6,380 studies retrieved from databases. Eight studies demonstrated higher anxiety levels in subjects with periodontitis, among which only one study presented a high risk of bias. The GRADE tool revealed a low level of evidence for the anxiety outcome measured by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), both for case-control and cross-sectional studies. However, since anxiety may affect the quality of life of many subjects, it reinforces the need for further studies that evaluate this association for more extended periods. High amounts of aluminum (Al) are found in soil and water. It is highly bioavailable, which makes it an important agent of environmental imbalance. Moreover, Al is considered a neurotoxic agent that is associated with several neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, this study investigated the effects of long-term Al chloride (AlCl3) exposure on motor behavior, oxidative biochemistry, and cerebellar tissue parameters. For this, adult Wistar rats were divided into three groups: Al-D1 (8.3 mg kg-1 day-1), Al-D2 (5.2 mg kg-1 day-1), and control (distilled water); all groups were orally exposed for 60 days by intragastric gavage. After the exposure period, animals performed the open field, elevated plus maze, rotarod, and beam walking tests. Then, the blood and cerebellum were collected to evaluate Al levels and biochemical and morphological analyses, respectively. Our results demonstrate that animals exposed to Al doses presented a higher Al level in the blood. In the spontaneous locomotor activity, Al exposure groups had traveled a lower total distance when compared with the control group. There was no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) between exposed and control groups when anxiogenic profile, forced locomotion, fine motor coordination/balance, pro-oxidative parameter, and density Purkinje cells were compared. Thus, aluminum exposure in equivalent doses to human consumption in urban regions did not promote significant changes in the cerebellum or motor parameters.

RESUMEN: Objetivo: Analizar el efecto de un programa de Entrenamiento MultiComponente (EMC) sobre autonomía funcional, fuerza muscular, composición corporal, capacidad cognitiva y perfil glucémico de mujeres mayores. Material y Métodos: 13 mujeres con edad 61,0 ± 6,0 años, participaron del estudio durante 12 semanas, siendo ­ Entrenamiento Resistido (ER); martes y viernes ­ Entrenamiento Funcional (EF) y Entrenamiento de Judo Adaptado (EJA), en la misma sesión; se utilizó el protocolo de autonomía funcional ­ GDLAM, Mini Examen del Estado Mental (MEEM), test de predicción de 1RM, índices: glicémico, masa corporal (IMC), relación cintura-cadera (IRCQ), relación cintura-estatura (RCE) y siete pliegues cutáneos. Resultados:Hubo mejora (p<0,05) para todos los test del GDLAM y el índice general (∆% = -21,31%; p-valor = 0,0006). Para el MEEM fue identificado mejoría en el puntaje general (∆%=8,98%; p-valor= 0,002), atención, cálculo y lenguaje. También hubo mejora (p<0,05) para todos los ejercicios de fuerza. Para composición corporal: porcentaje de grasa (%G) (∆%= -11,8%; p-valor= 0,001). Conclusión: El programa de EMC realizado cuatro veces en la semana, durante 12 semanas fue eficaz para mejorar la autonomía funcional, la fuerza muscular, la función cognitiva, para variables % G, masa magra y grasa de las mujeres estudiadas.


BSTRACT: Objective: To analyze the effect of a Multi-Component Training (CMT) program on functional autonomy, muscle strength, body composition, cognitive capacity and glycemic profile of older women. Material and Methods: 13 women aged 61.0 ± 6.0 years, participated in the study for 12 weeks, being -Resisted Training (ER); Tuesday and Friday - Functional Training (EF) and Adapted Judo Training (EJA), in the same session; The functional autonomy protocol was used - GDLAM, Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), 1RM prediction test, glycemic index, body mass (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), waist-height ratio (WHtR) and seven skin folds. Results:There was improvement (p <0.05) for all GDLAM tests and the general index (Δ% = -21.31%; p-value = 0.0006). For the MMSE, an improvement was identified in the general score (Δ% = 8.98%; p-value = 0.002), attention, calculation and language. There was also improvement (p <0.05) for all resistance exercises. For body composition: fat percentage (% G) (Δ% = -11.8%; p-value = 0.001). Conclusion:The CME program performed four times a week for 12 weeks was effective in improving functional autonomy, muscle strength, cognitive function, for variables % F, lean mass and fat of the women studied.

Este artículo se ha propuesto como una revisión de las investigaciones que han surgido en la última década en el campo de la neurociencia, y que se hayan relacionadas con la actividad neurobiológica y funcional de la toma de decisiones por parte del ser humano. Así, ha sido posible identificar y dar cuenta de las estructuras del sistema nervioso central que son claves en la comprensión de los procesos relacionados con la toma de decisiones, y a su vez han permitido establecer el rol de las emociones como influencia determinante en este proceso. De igual forma, las investigaciones han posibilitado conocer cómo se lleva a cabo la actividad de tomar decisiones en el cerebro, las relaciones entre las diversas regiones y cómo las emociones guían el resultado.Además, se ha llegado a destacar dos sistemas que explicarían el proceso de la toma de decisiones, uno asociado a la intuición (sistema práctico), donde se destaca la actividad metabólica de la amígdala cerebral y sus redes neuronales; otro que corresponde al razonamiento (sistema analítico), en el cual resalta la participación de las conexiones neuronales de la porción ventromedial del córtex prefrontal.


This paper has proposedas a review of the researchthat has been appearing in the last decade in the field of neuroscience, and the relationship with the neurobiological and functional activity of the human decision making. Therefore, it has been possible to identify and inform the key structures of the central nervous system in the comprehension of the related processes, and it has allowed to stablish the important influence of the emotion in this process. Also, the research hasallowed to know how the decision-making process has been referred in the brain, the relationship between the different brain regions and the emotion who led the outcome. Thus, there are two systems involved in the decision makingprocess; one related with the intuition (practical system), where the metabolic activity of the cerebral amygdala is remarked with their neural networks, and other related with reasoning (analytical system), in which, is important to note the involvement of the ventromedial portion of the prefrontal cortex.


Este artigo foi proposto como uma revisão das pesquisas que surgiram na última década no campo da neurociência, e que tem sido relacionada à atividade neurobiológica e funcional da tomada de decisão pelo ser humano. Assim, foi possível identificar e explicar as estruturas do sistema nervoso central que são fundamentais na compreensão dos processos relacionados à tomada de decisões e, por sua vez, permitiram estabelecer o papel das emoções como influência determinante nesse processo. Da mesma forma, a pesquisa permitiu saber como é a atividade de tomada de decisão no cérebro, as relações entre diferentes regiões e como as emoções orientam o resultado. Ademais, foram destacados dois sistemas que explicam o processo de tomada de decisão, um associado à intuição (sistema prático), que enfatiza a atividade metabólica da amígdala cerebral e suas redes neurais; outro correspondente ao raciocínio (sistema analítico), no qual as conexões neuronais da porção ventromedial do córtex pré-frontal são destacadas.
